Information for the entry of tourists, the extension of vacation and the visitors’ permit.
For a visit and for the entry to South Africa a visitors’ permit is necessary. According to the citizenship of the tourist, a visa has to be applied for before entering South Africa. Most Europeans are exempted from this for a length of 90 days. It enables that a visitors’ permit can be issued upon presentation of a return ticket (within 90 days).
This means that as a German citizen you can enter South Africa and reside there without any problems. Information about which group of countries require a visa can be found under: www.home-affairs.gov.za/visa schedule.asp
A one-time extension of 90 days for the visitors’ permit can be submitted at the Department of Home Affairs under submission of a small fee and the presentation of the reason for the extension, as well as proof of sufficient financial resources and a new return flight ticket.
If the requirements for a work permit are not met, there is a possibility to apply for a visitors’ permit with permission to work for a length of 6 months. This implies allowance from the head of the Ministry of the Interior.
