A temporary residence permit can be obtained by the life partners of South African citizens or people with permanent residence relatively easy.

A requirement for this is that the partners live together and a proof of financial, emotional, medical and physical assistance has to be given. If, within the context of a life partnership permit, a work, study or business permit is applied for, the documents in accordance with it has to be submitted in a simplified form.

Furthermore, if there is proof that the relationship has existed for five years a permanent residence permit can be applied for. The demands in regard to the temporary residence permit are similar, but the application procedure and the processing time are considerably different.
